PRISCILA DE CARVALHO
September 10 to October 16, 2010
Russell/Projects is pleased to present, for the first time in the South-Eastern US, the work of Priscila de Carvalho: “SLICK”, from September 10th to October 16th, 2010. The Brazilian artist’s mixed-media paintings and gallery installation examine the architecture and the society affected by the out-of-control urban sprawls and the ceaseless development of major cities today.
Priscila de Carvalho recreates the favelas, the slum quarters of Brazilan cities, where the absence of streets is a constant. In their place are masses of silhouetted structures, filled with an infinite number of white and yellow dots, symbolizing the multitude of inhabitants dwelling in these cities within a city.

Industry Insiders: Hard Working Artist Shay Kun
New York-based artist Shay Kun isn't like your average artist: he'd rather work than party. He was educated at Bezalel Academy of Art and Design in Jerusalem and received his Masters at Goldsmiths College in London. He's been painting fervently since childhood, and the cleanliness and meticulous organization of his studio space is proof that he treats his passion with professionalism. His large-scale paintings involve landscape backgrounds inspired by those of the 19th century Hudson River School (Thomas Cole, Frederic Church, and Albert Bierstad) with modern intrusions and kitschy images of the everyday. He has upcoming shows at Benrimon Contemporary, New York; Hezi Cohen Gallery, Tel-Aviv and Russell Projects in Richmond.

HELENA WURZEL, VANITAS
January 21 to March 7, 2010
Receptions for the artist Thursday January 21st & Friday January 22nd, 2010
Russell/Projects is pleased to announce VANITAS, the gallery’s inaugural exhibition. This exhibition acts as the first solo exhibition for emerging artist Helena Wurzel. The artist’s oeuvre includes oil paintings on canvas and hand-cut paper collages. Wurzel explores the physical and emotional demands and influences of popular culture placed on young women to ‘be perfect’ by transforming every-day moments of herself and her friends into both contemplative and celebratory glimpses of private rituals and relationships.
Wurzel employs a multi-dimensional approach to the subject of vanity, in subject matter, material and scale. For example, Second Silence and Beautiful Marian contain few figures in scenes of self-reflection and introspection, balanced by the plethora of figures in vivacious moments, in Girls Getting Dressed and Slide Show. The artist’s mastery over scale and composition adds a lyrical component to the exhibition, with intimate paintings such as the artists self portrait, Vanitas at 16 x 12 inches balanced by panoramas including My Mac measuring 45 x 97 inches.
